MARTA.

The main and active port of Lake Bolsena, it is a quaint fishing village.
The most famous historical event occurred in 534 A.D., and features the Ostrogoth queen Amalasunta, daughter of Theodoric, who was segregated and killed on Martana Island.
The building of the famous fortress, on the other hand, dates back to the 13th century at the behest of Pope Urban IV; legend has it that the first stone was laid on the ruins of the ancient Bisenzio, today only the octagonal tower that is the symbol of the town remains.
Church and lordships fought over the village in the early Middle Ages, alternating a long series of dominations, until 1649, the year of Castro’s destruction.
A golden chalice dating back to the 6th century is kept in the Church of St. Martha; according to tradition, a reliquary with a fragment of St. John the Baptist’s arm is also kept there.
But it is to the shrine of Our Lady of the Mount that is linked the oldest and most important festival held every year on May 14 known as Barabbata or Festa delle Passate.
